My own little neck of the woods observations; for my dd and some of her teammates it was the jump to level 9. Puberty/injuries were not kind to my daughter and she decided that she did not have the drive to push through any longer. We are a month into the separation and I am not going to lie, it has been tough.

Girls' bodies grew more rapidly during covid gym shutdowns which caused skill loss and struggle, there were injuries coming back into the gym (even with all precautions taken by the gym to ease in), girls were used to more free time and then faced combining gym with middle school in person for the first time, etc.
This is an interesting point that brings a medical article I just read to mind. Apparently, the age of first menstruation decreased dramatically for a sizeable number of girls during the lock down. I can't recall the details of the statistical model they were using, but effectively the less active the girl was the more likely she was to undergo "precocious puberty."
