Want to say thank you to USA Gymnastics for posting the list of banned coaches in their March/April 2011 magazine! I googled quite a few names to see what the reason was for banning these people, and found many were convicted *** offenders!!

Fellow parents: we can't be too careful these days with our precious sons and daughters! Check out the list, just to be safe!!

If you don't get this magazine, you can google it by looking up Permanently Ineligible Members within USA Gymnastics.

I love that they post a list of banned members, I just wish that they would add a photo of the offenders as well. Just googling names, there is the possibility that someone is unfortunate enough to share the offenders name. It would be great to know if the offenders came into your gym. I'm sure that I read a case somewhere that a banned member dropped his first name and started only going by the middle name in order to get back into a gym. I would love to see a pic of the offenders so that I might keep an eye out for them. Anyone know where to find pics of them?

not yet. but that is where the background checks will eventually evolve. in the interim, they are listed as *** offenders in the state you see listed. there you will find their pictures that were taken at the time they were booked.:) also keep in mind that several of them will be in prison until your children have children so they should be expired by the time your grandchildren do gymnastics.:)

actually, all of them are with the exception of 1. and there is also 1 that is a woman.

Which on is a woman? Dana is a man, I found a picture. And I could not find a conviction or arrest for a handful of them. The first two I did not find a conviction for via google are Doug Boger and Steve Elliot. (I could not find any info online of wrong-doing.)

Does anyone know the criteria USA-G uses for putting people on the list?

jeena nilson-utah.

yes. today, if you are charged with a sexual crime against a minor you are temporarily suspended pending the outcome of the case. plea agreements are the same as guilty verdicts brought forth by a jury or judge. so, once the case is completed and a guilty verdict adjudicated USAG removes their credentials and places them on the banned list.

there are a few on the list having to do with non-violent crimes [like peeping] against women that were not minors and some in regard to child pornography. some whose probation expired and some who were banned before there existed a registered *** offender list. some of these will not show up anywhere but suffice that USAG knows who they are and banned them.

the 2 that you named were plea agreements that were sealed.

... but suffice that USAG knows who they are and banned them.

Thanks for Jeena- I don't know how I missed her. I've been spending a lot of time with "the list" this week trying to get more info on a certain individual. I googled most of the people on the list, and most of them did show up in police records and/or news articles. I feel kind of ill now...

The problem I have with USA-G not saying why they are banned is that these people can give parents a song and dance about how they were wrongly accused. (And, as it turns out, a lot of parents believe their stories.) The USA-Swimming list gives a code of conduct section number that they violated.

In Australia we have to apply to the government for a blue care, this is called working with children. The government does background check and if pass you will get a blue card. You are not allowed to work with children unless you have a blue card.

yes sally. as i have posted before, there are 3 prongs to a coach getting a credential in the USA.

1. pass the background check

2. pass the safety exam

3. pay for professional membership.

if you do not pass the background check it won't matter what you do on the test or how much money you pay for pro membership. no background check=so stepping in the venue of a usag sanctioned event.

and none of these are required to coach in a gym. that's the downside. although lots of club owners will not hire unless a background check has been obtained.

One of the ones banned owned the gym my dd went to. His offenses will never show up on a background check because there were never any criminal charges filed. Trust me....he should definitely be banned! The sad thing is that he could still own the gym and train girls, he just couldn't walk on to the floor at a sanctioned gym meet.

this is correct...until the liability carriers implement new policies coming very soon to the gyms near you!:)

Is this list comprehensive? I know a coach who was arrested a couple years ago and should be on this list, but I don't see him -- perhaps he just hasn't gone to trial yet...

We have one in MN also he has not gone to trial yet....so he is not on the list either. I am sure he will be coming to list near you soon.

The sad thing is the families and children who are hurt by these indivduals. I am glad to read in Dunno's post that more is being done to protect families and children from the few bad coaches not only in gymnastics but other sports as well.

he will be. he is currently suspended. pending the outcome of his case. once his plea/guilt/sentencing hits the system you will find him on the list, or the magazine or whichever takes place first.:)

understand that USAG must have a conviction to permanently ban and place someone on the list.

post up who it is or send me a PM and i'll let you know the staus of his case.:)

also, and i forgot this as it is important...there is a small chance that someone could be missed initially. the system of reporting is not failproof. the back up is when the coach will re-apply and reconfirm his/her background check. it is then that they will show up in the system and get red flagged. after that is investigated further, the background check company turns over their findings to USAG. it is then that USAG will ban the coach/credentials.

and...i can tell you in some cases that the coach hit the list before they were even listed as registered *** offenders in their respective state. as is often the case with these issues, the systems that are used by law enforcement and other agencies like USAG are not immediate & transparent and not connected to one another.
