DS was (according to his coach) happily warming up and helicoptering himself around the pommel top mushroom, but his dismount went wrong and he rolled his pinkie finger. He has a buckle fracture and will probably be out for two weeks. He can come in for strength and conditioning, but won't be able to do a whole lot for a little while. I hereby invoke all the powers that be to grant me the patience I will need to manage him. He's going to be like a hamster without a wheel . . .

Oh, and for those who've been following the level drama, the coaches have finally decided that no one is moving up to level 6 this year. They are all going to pursue perfection at level 5. No, I am not joking. By the way, HAS anyone ever seen a manna competed on parallel bars at level 5? Or a 12.2 awarded for a pommel horse routine? AGGGGGHHH!

I am happy to say that I have seen a perfect score on p-bars. I don't however know what a manna is. I guess I should considering my DS in a L5 lol! We were at the Iowa Boys Invitational last year and there was a boy (probably 10 or 11) that received 2 perfect scores that day. One on p-bars and the other I think was high bar. He was amazing! The judges even sought him out after the awards to congratulate him personally! I thought that was really cool! The funny part is that the boys from Chows were doing harder things in their warm-ups than my son could even imagine doing! I knew even before they started competing that this was not going to be a good day for my DS....lol!!

At regionals we saw a few Mannas on pbars and a few 12's on pommel. There were some wonderful routines. I really think that having a really good L5 year makes the transition to 6 easier. They know what good form feels like and it transfers. Sorry about the finger- stupid mushroom!- I hope it heals quickly and he doesn't drive you crazy in the process. I have a mild concussion ( my non gym kid) and he is being so difficult with following restrictions. He feels fine and want to go 100%.

My DS broke his pinkie almost 2 years ago when he fell off ot the mushroom. He was in a splint for 4 days, a cast for 2 weeks, then two more weeks of limited activity. I won't lie, he did come back worse on rings than before the did it (obviously caught up over time). But he broke his elbow back in September and had a cast for 3 weeks then 2 weeks of limited activity. His coaches have told me that he came back from this injury better than he was before it! I guess that all of that conditioning paid off. LOL

DS broke his thumb on pbars , then he broke his ring finger on the same hand while being spotted doing a double front on the trampoline. It has not slowed his progress down one bit. I hope your DS's finger heals fast!!

Ugh on both accounts! I have been to a L4 meet with a few perfect scores on pommel. Boys were warming up floor with back tucks! These were very young boys not repeats . No idea about the manna for L5. Our boys are working them but I doubt will compete them

Gymboymom, I've seen that gym or its twin at a big meet we go to every year. I remember my jaw dropping when I saw them at L4 swinging to handstand on every pbars swing.

(And in case it's not clear, I'm being facetious. I do think our second year level 5s will do well, and DS does desperately want to get his manna on pbars, but I'll just be happy if they all have good years and can feel good about improving over last year skillwise. Our first meet's in December, which feels a lot closer this weekend than it did last weekend!)

DS did his first mostly conditioning practice today. He stayed the whole time and grimly continued with endless core exercises. On the up side, his splits ought to be pretty darn good by the end of this little adventure.

Ugh! Sorry about the finger :( Hopefully the conditioning pays off!!!

I have to admit, in oru state, holding the boys at a level for perfection is rare. We have one boy repeating 5 this year but he doesn't have all of his 6 skills yet, and did not do great at 5 last year. Otherwise, most everyone moves up as soon as they have the base routines and they work on bonuses throughout the year.

I bet he will have a agreat year! It must be nice to just have an answer!

So sorry to hear about his pinkie - hope he has a quick recovery and is able to get enough conditioning in to burn off that energy!

Ugh! Poor kid!! Here's to hoping that healing time flies quickly...for him AND you! No 12.2 pommel routines from my ds. However, he saw a few in the 11's his first season of L5. We are in the same boat as you, profmom. No L6 until everyone has all the L6 skills WITH bonuses-so, L5 again it is.

Hope the finger heals quickly! As long as he gets to uptrain and is happy that's what matters right?

Hope his Finger heels quickly! We have a kid on our team who does a breathtaking manna. Light, skinny, strong...that is the combo needed for one at level 5.

My 7 year old L5 does manna, or close to it, on Pbars. He does a swing up to a V-hold that has been slowly turning into swing up to manna hold. I have not seen the other boys at gym do it. They typically swing to L-holds.

Update -- not good news. He saw the hand doctor today, and it's going to be a longer road than we were originally told. He's in a splint for three weeks and will probably be restricted for three weeks beyond that. Poor little guy is very unhappy.

Oh no! So sorry to hear the update. Hopefully the coaches can figure out some productive use of his time in the interim. We had a girl who broke her wrist this summer and now she has amazing aerials and back tucks on beam because she couldn't work on much else. Hoping you find a silver lining!

oh no! Poor guy! I bet he is devastated!!! No one likes bad news like that, least of all a gymnast. Good luck to you! I remember how hard it was when D was out for 3 months. He was brutal to deal with :( Hopefully he heals really fast!

Poor thing. I hope he recovers well. I know it is frustrating for the boys when they want to be out there.
