how do you deal with a large blister?

My son came home today with a large blister in the middle of his palm. I'm used to dealing with rips and overgrown calluses, but this is our first blister. What is the quickest way to get him back in action?

take a needle, put alcohol on the end or use a lighter and then make the small hole. warm soap and water and 'push/squeeze' the fluid or blood out of the bubble. leave the skin in place as long as possible because that is the best band aid.
