Our coach is adamant about teaching my level 7 11yo son a Chinese tap swing in order to learn how to dismount properly out of giants on high bar. My feeling is that a young gymnast has no business doing this skill unless they are considering multiple flips. The level 7 routine requires only a layed out fly away. I am curious of those with more experience what your opinion is on this subject. My son has learned the tap swing, but can not control the rotation on a single fly away, and I think it is very dangerous. Thanks for any input.

It is not dangerous at all unless they are doing it wrong. Can he do a regular tapping flyaway like the following?...

Ask any 5 coaches at what point the chinese tap should be introduced and you'll get 5 different answers.

Thank you for these resources. My only comment would be that my son is a child and coming down from that height is very different than for Valerie Lukin who was a full grown man. Also in the opening statement, Mizo from Champions in Houston Texas says in his gymnastics minute segment, "the Tap swing is a progression for students who want to do multiple flips out of a giant." Thanks again, I love this forum, great to discuss with like minded people.

Usually you can land on more padding in the JO program. Also...if your son is a L7...the coach may very well be training him for higher level dismounts.
