I completely understand this perspective. And firmly believe it is why some of the kids quit once they hit optionals. I have to admit, I am pretty thrilled my girl doesn't care about the placing, she cares about the tricks/skills. Because when she gets lucky and actually places in something, it is reallllllly fun!!

Fortunately, DS is like this too. But he has had many friends from many gyms leave the sport. It is good to be intrinsically motivated, but man, that little "pat on the back" or public recognition once in a while doesn't hurt ;)

No, it doesnt. Which is why I was thrilled my dd did so well for her first optional meet. It will give her the confidence to carry on...and probably be at the back of the pack for the rest of the season, lol...

I would very much doubt that someone who is constantly getting 38's will not have all of their skills for the next level by next competition season.
Someone is sandbagging any time someone is good enough to place at State or get high scores is ready to be moved

I respectfully disagree. There is that wonderful thing called a kip that has given level 3s with 38 scores fits. And flyaways, Giants, and bhs on beam can provide enough fear to limit any gymnast.

Definitely. We had a level 3 that scored in the 37 and 3s and she was deathly afraid of cartwheels on beam and couldn't get her kip. And I've seen it at other levels, too.

state champion in one event repeating because she doesn't have solid skills in all 4 events for next level.....tough but true it happens

We are in Queensland Australia and at our junior state competition we have mandatory upgrading so if a gymnast level 4-6 gets a score of 37 or above they have to go up to the next level. They have to the start of the next year to start competing at that level.

Up until July 2014, my state ymca committee had mandatory move up rules. Our problem was that they were set too low and it forced girls to move up without the needed skills.
It wasn't extremely evident in local meets, but when we competed at Y Nationals, it was obvious! That was why they did away with mandate scores. Our girls are scoring better now that they don't move up until they are ready.

we have a gym here that will move girls down a level if they switch to that gym. Not because of skill just because they want to win every state me at each level. Of course their teams consist of five people or so. Even level 2.

If you don't place tops in state you don't get to compete there

^^haha must steal this

We have a girl that has L10 skills on all events except beam. She has competed L8 for 3 years, and basically won everything last year, scoring high 37s at all meets. But she can't get a L9 BHS series on beam due to a debilitating fear. Is it fair to make her move up to 10 and be pressured, stressed out, potentially hurt and also get decimated in the AA, over 1 event in order to make other more typical L8s more likely to win? I don't think so. I think kids should compete where it makes sense based on their skill level and personality, according to each individual gymnast/coach/parent combo.

I agree that sandbagging does happen, too, and it is unfair to the gymnasts. But I think sometimes as parents, we jump to that conclusion to quickly and incorrectly.

i dont know. its a really hard call. part of me thinks it is more fair for the girl to move on to 9 and take the hit on beam than it is to take all the wins in 8 again. when she repeats 8, its like her competitors are taking the hit for her instead of herself, kwim?

But doing this, pushing a kid to that level, can end their career. Many really good gymnasts stay at level 8 forever. We have 2 that made their level 8 qualifying score, went to regionals, and are repeating level 8 because of bars/beam fears.

good point! my daughter hasnt been in this situation (yet? :p) and we havent known anyone who has, so ill admit my opinion could change if it became personal. and really i dont have a strong opinion...just sort of thinking out loud...

Yes!!!! This!!!!!

If a kid has L10 skills and is competing L8.....EIGHT????!!!!......because of one event, then yes, she should move at least to L9 and scratch beam.

Not everyone has to be an all arounder though. If you're basically an L10 except for one skill, then no part of me thinks it is okay for you to be competing L8. Scratch the event and move on until you get the skill. To me, it's like taking candy from a baby....yes you're going to win. Duh. But what a hollow victory to be beating kids who are two levels down from you.

That was basically what I was going to say... have her become an event specialist.... or compete L9 with her L8 beam routine (maybe upgrade the dismount if it isn't a B). She would STILL have a 8.7 - 9.2 SV (higher if she gets the connections bonus).
And if it is the BHS series she has issues with, maybe try ROBT... some girls do better with that.

She would still be competing. She would be moved up to a more appropriate level. She wouldn't have stress to the point of quitting (unless the ONLY reason she is staying is that she is DOMINATING).

I had one of those high scorers last year, she might get close to that by end of season this year might not.

As her parent I have given this a lot of thought. As she also isn't usually the first to get new skills. She was one of the last to get her kip last year.

So if she hadn't gotten her kip last year, I would not have allowed her to compete L3 again, everything else was just too solid.

Now this year at L4 she is scoring low-to mid thirties, if she stays in that range I would let her compete L4 again since she has room to improve if she doesn't get her flyaway (that is all she is missing for L5). And even so I would be more inclined to add gym time to make sure she got the skill then hold her back.

But this is compulsories, optionals are a whole different thing, because there is room for growth and change in the level itself, as well as having some things the same and still move up by adding skills.
