We are still a level 4, so I am kind of looking ahead, but I see a lot of posts that talk about girls being better at optional levels than they were at compulsories. Is that because they optional routine is tailored to show off their strengths? Or are optional levels less picky?
Since I'm still fairly new to all this, I'd appreciate any opinions! We had a meeting tonight and HC is having the new girls on the team do Xcel gold then eventually score out of 4/5 then go to either 6 or 7. Is this common? DD did two meets at level 3 while on the pre-team this spring and now...

In our gym the USAG team has two different leotards. Compulsory has a different competition Leo than the optionals. The parents had thought all the USAG should have the same Leo's. Is it normal for the optional levels to be different?

How did you go about studying? You need to know...
Hi..first post here!
My 6 yo DD has been in a competitive squad for a while now, (admittedly still don't seem to know enough about competitive gymnastics) and I have recently been told by coaches that she is on the 'compulsory track' and they are aiming for her to compete in Compulsory 5 next...
Hiya-
So, Im confused about the difference between these two groups. I see the New L4/5 says its for parents AND gymnasts and that JO Compulsory is just parents. Aside from that, how do I differentiate the two, please?
Thanks!
So a few regions have competed now, and looking at the results, plus this post from @Flossyduck got me thinking...
I don't think I agree with the elite system we have in the first place, I think by selecting so young and the "in age" thing we're missing many talented kids who may mature or...
I was at the gym today and a coach told me that soon I will realize that dds strongest events will be bars and vault because of her body type. Urgh ...I don't really want to drag this topic but I just want to ask for reassurance that maybe, maybe, he is wrong? She said that compulsory esp floor...
I am the head coach for a teeny gym in the middle of nowhere. I came in here about 6 months ago. I've coached at a much larger gym before and I love it here! As of now we have like 150 rec/preschool kiddos and 5 on team. We do USAG JO Compulsory only. We compete level 4 and up. The owner has...

As a spin off to an ongoing thread about these, I noticed that a US parent posted that her daughter is level 9 and can't do them. I thought they only went up to level 10 and that's when a college scholarship was a real possibility so I'm assuming their level 9/10 is more advanced than our level...
I've been hearing and reading different opinions on this matter. Some feel compulsories don't matter and it's more important to not waste valuable time and to rush to get to optionals while others feel it's important to take the time in compulsories to learn solid basics for higher levels. What...
I have a question about what your gym's practices are like. This our first year doing team. Our gym places all 6 yr olds regardless of ability on level 1 to start competing, and they only move up one level each year depending on state score at the end of meet season. When I asked about this...
