Does anyone know if Ashton Locklear is going to attempt to compete AA? Or at least floor in addition to her bars + beam? I saw a video on her instagram of some floor tumbling. I'm not sure how to link it from instagram but hopefully someone else can help me out!

I thought because she had back issues was the reason why she didn't do floor and vault. It looks like she is trying to get back into it

I'm pretty sure you are right about her back. I wonder if she is trying to do dloor to boost her chances for the 2020 olympics?

I know she has said that she doesn't do vault or floor because of a previous back injury. With Olympic teams going down to four members, my guess is she's trying to get at least a basic floor routine so that she could put up a routine in the event of an emergency.

I agree! I remember the Kocian vs Locklear discussions leading up to the Olympics.... One of the major arguments for Kocian over Locklear was that Kocian could step in and compete floor in case of injury. Like you said, maybe she is just going for a basic, safe routine to eliminate that argument in the future.

I don't think a double back is going to cut it lol. I don't know about her back , it is her knees that worry me. They always look as if they are going to snap at any minute poor girl.

She fractured her back and was out for a year recovering. She's also had shoulder issues. While her knees look fragile, I don't recall her ever having a knee injury.

Interesting. Would assume she had a specialist spot virtually locked up if she can stay healthy. Not sure how this fits into that.

Right, I forgot about those specialist spots. I'm not sure why she would risk injury then by attempting AA (or even just floor) when she could play it safe as a specialist.

I saw a video on her snapchat story today, she had taken that double back to the normal floor.

That tumbling isn't anywhere near close enough to be useful to the US team. Given her floating kneecaps and fragile body (comparatively speaking), I doubt Ashton could produce a useful floor, let alone vault, in just a few months.

I'm guessing she'll be on the team as a bars specialist, but she sure doesn't have a guaranteed medal. The European and Chinese bars girls have created a fiercely competitive field, and Locklear's mid-range difficulty might not hold up.

Off topic, but kinda not, it may not even be a US AA champ this year. The new girls aren't yet a bastion of consistency, and Liu Tingting, Mai Murakami, Ellie Downie, Zsofia Kovacs, and Angelina Melnikova could all make a push for gold.

As much as I love our Americans, I'm kinda looking forward to some other gymnasts giving them a run for their money. It makes the meets much more exciting to watch! I'll never forget the nail biter that was the '96 Olympics.
