Here they are guess they are scunci brand Link Removed
these are the only ones we use. Nothing else will keep her hair in for a 4.5 hour practice. DD's head has toughened up ;). Now that she is older, she takes them out herself.

I French braid my dd hair at night after her shower. She sleeps in the braids and then wears them all day to school and practice. There are a few flyaways but for the most part her hair stays in place. If I really want it to stay I use some gel. We started doing her hair at night while she is doing her reading in order to save time in the morning and for some reason her head is extra tender in the morning.

My dd uses 3 of the these scunci hair bands. They are the cloth covered ones. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Scunci-No...bucket_id=irsbucketdefault&findingMethod=p13n As well she adds gel tot her hair before and after putting it in the ponytail. I think the gel is a big part of the trick. This is for practice. for meets it's gel, ponytail, more gel, hair clips, hair spray then scrunchy.

I too fear damage and avoid the silicone bands.

I think the damage is something that depends on the person with the silicone ones. Dd only wears them a few times a week with no issues and I never take them out unless I am sleeping my hair drives me nuts when it's down so I always have it in a bun or pony, and have no damage. I do know a friend I recommended them to though had damage from them.
