Neither vault is dynamic

Really... this is the overall key... you truly can't "bounce" off the table without much more power...
  • With 20x the power on the first vault... it would be a hand front
  • With 10x the power on the second... it would be the winning compulsory vault
  • With 20x the power on the second... it would be Haleigh Bryant's vault

Vault is my daughter’s nemesis! The only event she has not been able to improve much in 4 years! 4 years of different yurchenkos..tucks, pikes, layouts, super low fulls. Never scoring higher than 9 at best and never getting a great block ! It’s been a frustrating event for her to say the least. Same corrections, trying her hardest to make those corrections, nothing working ..BUT..She has recently been introduced to the yurchenko half on front off and MAN does it look like it has WAY more potential to become a great vault for her! I have zero idea why she could never generate a good block going backwards into the vault nor does she (or apparently any coach she has had thus far!) My best guess is lack of shoulder/back flexibility to hit the right angle needed but that’s just a guess. Like the OP mentioned with her DD’s vault , mine tumbles more like what you see in men’s tumbling. Wider arm position in round off and in handsprings of any type. Once she got out of compulsory gymnastics she flourished! I know how important basics are but I am very thankful she has been at a gym that does not work to perfect compulsory levels/scores but rather focuses on the big picture of what’s really needed for progressions into big skill! Had she gone to a gym with a minimum AA score of 36 or 37 to get out of compulsory levels she might still be in those levels! 🤣 But as a 2nd year level 10…she scores in the 37s. So, what’s all my rambling about?
1.I agree, compulsory levels are frustrating and often do not translate into great optional gymnastics and
2.I would love to hear all your physic takes on vault and the yuerchenko!

I hear you on that. A specific all around score without exceptions can be very frustrating and counterproductive, especially when a gymnast misses by .05 and is told they need to repeat. I’m some ways vault is the easiest and hardest of all the events, as the mold aphorism goes, “you can’t teach speed”. If you just don’t have that speed and no power, you’re going to struggle.

My DD’s fundamental problem is that lack of speed and a proper run/board strike. So what does she need to generate more power? One thing that I know has frustrated some of her coaches is that she can jump about twice as far if she is told to just jump in the foam pit rather than onto the board. But I think that is common. Any advice on how to make her believe?
