Hi, at a meet this weekend we saw a team wearing shoes for beam, vault and floor. We've never seen any girls do that before. What is the purpose of wearing them - do they really help the girls grip the floor, beam better? Give better traction for vault and tumbling?
I was wondering what the typical vault setting is when you start your vaulters going over the vault? Is it better to start higher or start lower?
Also, do you know if their are required minimums for different levels?
What am I doing wrong on the FHS vault
(pretty sure it has to do with the preflight)...
When I vault, it feels like I go really high during the preflight, but by the time I contact the vault, it feels like I don't block as high as I used to. My mom noticed that my block seems more longer than...
I started working on Yurchenkos today, having never done them before. Set up some drills, and managed to do a few decent yurchenko timers over a block.
I have two questions. First, what is the preferred hand position on a yurchenko? I have always done and taught backhandsprings with the hands...
I have the ugliest yurchenko full ever. If I stick it, it has no form or neatness or anything, and if I come anywhere close to form during the actual vault, I never stick it . Does anyone have any tips? Coach won't let me move onto the one and a half until I land on my feet every time I...
The primary things a gymnast needs to learn in order to become a good vaulter are:
-Hitting the springboard with the chest up
-Driving the heels
-Extending the shoulders for a good block
The level 3 dive roll vault is, in my opinion, an extremely effective way of teaching kids to:
-Drop the...
Ask any gymnast or coach 'when does heel drive start on vault?' and the majority would say from the springboard to the vault table. In other words, once the feet contact the springboard the heels are driven upwards over the center of mass to facilitate rotation. I would challenge this answer in...
Hi coaches,
DO any of your gymnasts wear shoes to vault ? Oldest DD is coming back from achilles pain/injury. The sport tharapist thinks it would be a good idea to return to vault slowly and wearing some kind of footwear. What would you recommend?
The Level 4 coach and myself are stumped with a few Level 4's training for Level 5; when they "block" on the foam block in front of the pit, they do handstands and they allow gravity or a coach to help them fall over into the pit. We've attempted different techniques from having them pretend the...
Here's a video of me doing a yurchenko half on front off...wow, I can't believe this video was taped almost 3 years ago. Not one of my best, but still a decent one.

Hi Chalk Bucket:
A few coaches at my gym and myself were discussing where a gymnasts hands should be on the vault table, during a handspring front tuck. My opinion is that they should be closer to the front. (about right after where the curving starts to end) Other coaches thought more...
I have been doing handspring over the vault for a couple of weeks now my coach said i do them better then the girls, that have been doing them for months and i want to start doing ½ on ½ off any tips?
I'm coaching a girl who is working on her half-on,half-off vault. Her form is ok, but when her hands connect with the vaulting table they always seem to hit one at a time so she doesn't get a good block. She knows she's doing this and I'm trying to explain to her about how to get her hands to...
Hi, asking question as a parent. A bad habit was picked up along the way. A young and small L7 (just over 50#) somehow learned to pounce on springboard...she does a long hurdle, but the knees come up, she goes a bit too high, and she ends up punching the board with knees a bit bent, probably...
Block is an important part of so many skills. Most notably, handspring vaults and variations thereof.
I've tried coaching a block in several ways, and discussed it with many other coaches, and the conclusion I've come to seems to dissagree with the way many coaches teach it. I thought this...
